In the article "BreakPoint Hosts a Symposium on the Benedict Option," the author writes - "The Benedict Option’s vision is not to make nuns and monks of modern Christians. Nor does it propose a bunker (whether literal or figurative) from which to establish merely an updated version of the fundamentalist separatism of yore. Nor is the turn to Benedict a quixotic attempt to recapture a romanticized past."

Other reviews of the book miss this important point: it is not calling for Christians to become monks or nuns living separate from the world in monasteries. Rather, we must establish Christian counter-cultural communities that are embedded in and witnessing to the surrounding neo-pagan culture.

There are multiple ways to live out our Christian faith in today's neo-pagan society. Some of us will choose to live in co-op housing that is shared with a church facility. Others will live in stand-alone houses or in apartments geographically separate but joined in spirit and in practice with this Christian counter-cultural community. We are to be "missionaries in place," as another reviewer says.

Another article that aptly describes Christianity's battle against the rising tide of neo-paganism is "For Christianity in Time of War, There are No Painless Choices", and several others linked to on that webpage, all reviewing The Benedict Option from different angles. Get the book!
