In the article "Why Computers Are Less Expensive Than Health Care," the author writes - "If we look at 4k televisions, only a few years ago they cost more than $2000, but now you can go to Walmart and buy a 55-inch TV for only $350. An Apple iPhone 5 has 2.7 times the processing power of the 1985 Cray-2 supercomputer. Consumers and tech enthusiasts are excited about competition and the market, and many understand that it is the only way to lower prices and allow more people to get their hands on better technology."

The consumers of the health insurance and higher education markets and even those who are not consumers of these markets have a completely different attitude towards markets and competition. Unlike the tech industry's explosive growth and relentless price decreases, these markets have seen the complete opposite. According to the American Enterprise Institute, the price of textbooks and college tuition from 1996 to 2016 has tripled, while the price of medical care has doubled.


Government subsidies, or for that matter most subsidies from outside sources nearly always distort the laws of supply and demand, driving up prices and causing quality to stagnate. I have seen this in my software consulting career when working on contract at a government office: the employees would take 1-hour coffee breaks and 2-hour lunch breaks along with innumerable meetings, leaving most of the actual work to us outside consultants.

In my charitable work I've noticed how often the "poor" people we were serving expected that we raise large sums for their projects that often resulted in a new car or new apartment for the local leaders. We must break this cycle of dependency by showing people how they can come together and finance their own projects, whether it's caring for the poor and disabled, or constructing new buildings.
