Answer the Call!

Crew Members, Not Passengers

Check out this important Podcast! The speaker really nails it: he emphasizes that the Church, the Ark of Our Salvation, is not a cruise ship where we're passengers on vacation, relaxing and having a good time. No, we're sailors and marines who have tasks to do on this warship and battles to fight. He explains three very important passages of scripture:

"For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members don't have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts differing according to the grace that was given to us, if prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of our faith; or service, let us give ourselves to service; or he who teaches, to his teaching; or he who exhorts, to his exhorting: he who gives, let him do it with liberality; he who rules, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without hypocrisy: abhor that which is evil, cling to that which is good. In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate one to another; in honor preferring one another" (Romans 12:4-10).

"Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are various kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are various kinds of workings, but the same God, who works all things in all. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all. For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit; to another faith, by the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, by the same Spirit; and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discerning of spirits; to another different kinds of languages; and to another the interpretation of languages. But the one and the same Spirit works all of these, distributing to each one separately as He desires. For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ" (1 Corinthians 12:4-12).

"But to each one of us was the grace [gift] given according to the measure of the gift of Christ. ... He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers to equip the saints to do the work of ministering to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature, perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error; but speaking the truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ" (Ephesians 4:7 & 11-15).

Our first news article PATRIARCH BARTHOLOMEW SIGNS TOMOS OF AUTOCEPHALY OF ORTHODOX CHURCH OF UKRAINE describes the final steps taken to establish the new Orthodox Church of Ukraine. It was followed on the next day by a church service in Kyiv described in UKRAINE'S LEAP OF FAITH IS A STEP TOWARD DIMINISHING RUSSIAN INFLUENCE, our third news article.

Meanwhile, business goes on as usual in Russian-occupied Crimea - see news article two CRIMEA: "ANTI-MISSIONARY" PROSECUTIONS DOUBLE IN 2018, as well as in Russia proper - see news article four PUTIN CONGRATULATES ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS ON CHRISTMAS: dissenting Christians are being persecuted while Russia congratulates itself on being a good Orthodox Christian country.

Let me encourage you to watch the new movie I AM POTENTIAL mentioned in our fifth news article. It's about Patrick Henry Hughes who was blind and wheelchair-bound but became a talented musician, illustrating that we need to acknowledge the potential of people with disabilities instead of writing them off. All too often, people move away or look the other way when they see a person with a disability... because "normal" people don't want to think about the inevitability of "the three D's" - Disability, Disease or Death.

And let's not forget the Serbian Christians who twenty years ago were driven from their homeland in what is now Kosovo. Each Christmas they have returned to celebrate Christmas in their old church in Gjakova/Djakovica, but this Christmas they had to cancel due to protests by local Muslims, as told in SERBS CANCEL KOSOVO CHRISTMAS TRIP TO AVOID PROTEST, our sixth news article.

We have more than the usual number of news headlines in this issue, but allow me to comment just on the tenth - UKRAINIAN AUTOCEPHALY 'BEGINNING OF THE END' FOR MOSCOW PATRIARCHATE – OPED. This is obviously an overstatement: perhaps some in the Moscow Patriarchate have overplayed their hand and will eventually come to terms with reality on the ground, but to say it is "the beginning of the end" is exaggerating the case. We know personally several fine and decent Russian Orthodox priests and bishops who will continue faithfully serving the Lord as they have in the past. Life will go on!

It's a few months after my a-fib & skin cancer treatments, so here's the latest: my personal physician ordered a "ColoGuard" stool test, and I sent it in on Dec. 31. Last Tuesday my doctor called me to say that the test was positive, meaning that I either have colon cancer or a polyp, so I should schedule a full colonoscopy. I told him that I've already scheduled one for this Thursday, Jan. 17. He said I must be sure to tell them that my ColoGuard test was positive. So please add my upcoming colonoscopy to your prayers. Thanks!

You simply must read this essay, a recent addition to our "Free Literature" page: "Theosis Is The True Purpose Of Human Life" at www.Agape-Biblia.org/literatura/#Chesterton (PDF, 37 pages) by Archimandrite George, Abbot of the Holy Monastery of St. Gregorios on Mount Athos. It reveals the true meaning of salvation, which is the process of theosis or deification, being transformed into the image and likeness of Christ. "Pursue peace with everyone and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14).

CRIMEA: "ANTI-MISSIONARY" PROSECUTIONS DOUBLE IN 2018
by Felix Corley: Forum 18 News Service

Forum18 News Service (9 Jan.) Compared to 2017, the first year they were implemented, punishments in Russian-occupied Crimea for ill-defined "missionary activity" doubled in 2018. Of 23 prosecutions for sharing faith or holding worship at unapproved venues, 19 ended in punishment. Also, 17 cases were brought for communities not using their full legal name.

"These punishments do have an impact," one member of a religious community in Crimea who was earlier fined for sharing their faith on the street told Forum 18 on 9 January 2019. "Believers go out to share their faith less often, and give out publications or invitations less openly. It is a question not just of fines – if you don't pay then fines are doubled, then if you still don't pay they impose compulsory labour." Twelve of the people punished in Crimea in 2018 – all Russian citizens – were fined about 10 days' average local wages each (Russian Administrative Code Article 5.26, Part 4 - "Russians conducting missionary activity").

A further seven people – all longtime residents who are Ukrainian citizens - were punished for participating in religious meetings of a community they belonged to. Six of the seven were given far higher fines of up to nearly two months' average local wages (Russian Administrative Code Article 5.26, Part 5 - "Foreigners conducting missionary activity"). These seven cases against Ukrainian citizens appear to be the first use in Russian-occupied Crimea of this Russian Administrative Code article, which is specifically aimed at non-Russians.

There were also 17 cases brought in Crimea in 2018 against 12 religious communities and 5 individuals to punish them for failing to use the full legal name of a registered religious community (Russian Administrative Code Article 5.26, Part 3 - "Implementation of activities by a religious organisation without indicating its official full name, including the issuing or distribution, within the framework of missionary activity, of literature and printed, audio, and video material without a label bearing this name, or with an incomplete or deliberately false label"). UKRAINE'S LEAP OF FAITH IS A STEP TOWARD DIMINISHING RUSSIAN INFLUENCE
from: Daily Signal

Ukraine's leap of faith (11 Jan.) Orthodox Christians celebrated Christmas on Jan. 7, according to the Julian calendar. This year's holiday was the first for the newly unified, national Orthodox Church of Ukraine, independent from Russian control for the first time since the 17th century. Monday's milestone marked a major step forward in Ukraine's ongoing efforts to diminish Russian influence, highlighting an intractable cultural divorce between the two erstwhile Soviet republics.

"Russia uses the church as one of the tools to influence Ukraine's domestic politics," said Julia Kazdobina, head of the Ukrainian Foundation for Security Studies. "By establishing an independent Ukrainian church with support from the Ukrainian government, Ukraine has shown its resolve in defying one of the most potent institutions in Russia," Kazdobina said.

In a Jan. 6 ceremony in Istanbul, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, foremost leader of the global Orthodox Church, granted the Orthodox Church of Ukraine full independence, or autocephaly, defying Russian claims of authority.

Two breakaway Ukrainian churches formed in the 1990s following Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union, but the Constantinople Patriarchate, historically the most influential center of the global Orthodox Church, had not until now officially recognized the Ukrainian splinter churches as legitimate and independent from Moscow. SERBS CANCEL KOSOVO CHRISTMAS TRIP TO AVOID PROTEST
from: Balkan Insight

Kosovars protest Serbs' Christmas trip (5 Jan.) Serbs who visit a church in the western Kosovo town of Gjakova/Djakovica for Orthodox Christmas each year have cancelled their trip after local Kosovo Albanians said they would stage a protest. Serb pilgrims who planned to travel from Serbia to visit the church in Gjakova/Djakovica for Orthodox Christmas on January 6 said on the Friday before that they have cancelled their trip after a protest was announced by local Kosovo Albanians.

The Association of Serbs from Djakovica accused "unknown persons" of creating a climate of "hysteria" and potential violence ahead of the visit, and said it would request an urgent meeting with international institutions in Kosovo and officials in Pristina. "We are not frightened. We continue the struggle to reclaim our dignity, human and religious rights," it said in a press release.

Kosovo Albanians in Gjakova/Djakovica had announced they would hold a peaceful protest on Saturday to oppose what they called "the visit by Serbian criminals in the name of a pilgrimage." They accuse some of the pilgrims of being responsible for crimes committed during the Kosovo war.

Sava Janjic, the abbot of the Visoki Decani Serbian Orthodox monastery in Kosovo, lamented the cancellation of the Serbs' visit. "So sad that Kosovo remains a territory in Europe where Christians can't celebrate Christmas in peace," Janjic wrote on Twitter. [read more...]

Works of the Law vs. Antinomianism

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit! Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!

legalism vs. antinomianismThis illustration provides a fairly good definition of "Works of the Law" or legalism vs. disregarding all laws and norms or "Antinomianism." In my previous essay "Works of the Law vs. Good Works" I emphasized the idea that the incorrect reaction against Works of the Law, that is, scrupulously observing the ritual Law of Moses, is to disregard the necessity for Christians to do good works: caring for the poor, widows and orphans, etc. Yet, there are some people who claim to be Christians but who label such good works as "the social Gospel" and instead focus only on winning souls for Christ, studying the Bible, etc.

But there is an even more extreme and incorrect reaction against Works of the Law, which is called "Antinomianism" - a fancy theological term that means being against all norms and laws. These people consider that our freedom in Christ means being free to disobey civil authorities at will. They take parts of verses such as "We must obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29b) and "For you are not under law, but under grace" (Romans 6:14b) to be licenses to disregard all human norms, laws and regulations such as speed limits and other traffic laws, import and export tariffs and other taxes, copyright laws, etc. I've known some who claim to be Christians but they commit fornication, smuggle electronic equipment across borders for their own personal use, they cheat on their income taxes, regularly violate speed limits and run red lights, reproduce copyrighted Christian literature without permission and many other sins and crimes.

What do the Scriptures tell us about this? Here's what St. Paul wrote in Romans 6:1-4 -

"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? May it never be! We who died to sin, how could we live in it any longer? Or don't you know that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him through baptism to death, that just like Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life."

It's an enticing argument: "If I sin, God will extend His grace and forgive me, so the more I sin the more grace will abound." Paul's response is - "God forbid!" (in the King James Version). We were baptized into Christ's death, so we should be dead to sin! But temptation is strong and we humans sometimes prove to be too weak to resist. Today, however, we have the expressions - "If it feels good, do it!" and "Whatever turns you on!" St. John wrote in Revelation 2:19-22 what the Angel of God said to the church in Thyatira -

"I know your works, your love, faith, service, patient endurance, and that your last works are more than the first. But I have this against you, that you tolerate your woman, Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. She teaches and seduces my servants to commit sexual immorality, and to eat things sacrificed to idols. I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. Behold, I will throw her into a bed, and those who commit adultery with her into great oppression, unless they repent of her works."

Yes, it is possible to even do "good works" such as service to the poor, helping widows and orphans, etc. but at the same time yield to sexual temptation, led into sin by women preachers and politicians who speak fancy words that seduce people into sexual immorality. The modern mantra is - "What you do in private doesn't matter, it's only what you do for society that's important!" - as if fornication, adultery, abortion, and homosexual acts have no effect on society. How foolish! When we have broken families with poverty-stricken and/or messed-up children, fatherless boys who grow up with no self-worth or any idea of how to become a man, tens of millions of dead babies, and worldwide plagues of HIV-AIDS and Ebola... yes, it does matter what people do in private!

Greed: Modern capitalism is based on the distorted idea that accumulating wealth is the most important thing in life, so that it becomes for many people a fixation or a compulsive-addictive behavior - an addiction - "greed is good." A fancier, more "theological-sounding" word for greed is covetousness. In Luke 12:15-21 we read how Jesus gave us the parable of the rich man -

"Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man's life doesn't consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses." He spoke a parable to them, saying, "The ground of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly. He reasoned within himself, saying, 'What will I do, because I don't have room to store my crops?' He said, 'This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. I will tell my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, be merry."' "But God said to him, 'You fool! Tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared -- whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

Envy: This is greed turned inside-out. Instead of simply striving for more and more fame, success, money and things for myself ("He who dies with the most toys wins" - how foolish!), envy looks at what other people have and, while secretly wishing to grab those things for myself, I outwardly condemn "the rich" for having so much wealth and not sharing it with "the poor" (that is, with me). This makes me appear very righteous and selfless, but it's actually a mirror-image of greed. If greed is the main sin of capitalism, envy is the main sin of socialism: Dorothy Sayers says it well - "Envy is the great leveler: if it cannot level things up, it will level them down... rather than have anyone happier than itself, it will see us all miserable together."

Gluttony: - Quoting from chapter 11 in my book The Ministry Driven Church, pages 79-80 -

Deut. 21:20-21 places the death sentence on drunkards and gluttons, and Prov. 23:20-21 tells us drunkenness and gluttony lead to laziness and poverty. In the New Testament we read: "But give attention to yourselves, for fear that your hearts become over-full of the pleasures of food and wine, and the cares of this life, and that day may come on you suddenly, and take you as in a net" (Lk. 21:34); "For we have spent enough of our past time doing the desire of the Gentiles, and having walked in lewdness, lusts, drunken binges, orgies, carousings, and abominable idolatries" (1 Pet. 4:3); "Let us walk properly, as in the day; not in reveling and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and lustful acts, and not in strife and jealousy" (Rom. 13:13); and "Now the works of the flesh are obvious, which are: … envyings, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God" (Gal. 5:19a and 21). Here we see that gluttony ("orgies," "carousings" or "reveling") is on the same level as drunkenness, and the last passage cited tells us, "those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God."

Time does not permit me to quote the Scriptures about Noah and the depraved nations that brought the Lord to despair of all humanity; of Lot and the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah, then Lot's incest with his daughters; Abraham looking for a wife for Isaac but not from the surrounding immoral pagan nations - Genesis 24:7-8; Isaac looking for a wife for Jacob but not from the surrounding immoral pagan nations - Genesis 28:1-2; but the prophet Hosea being commanded to take a prostitute as a wife for a parable of Israel's whoring after other gods and committing sexual immorality - Hosea 4:6-14. All of these things and more in the Old Testament are given to us as negative examples of what we should not do as Christians - "Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted" (1 Corinthians 10:6).

When Jesus sent out His Apostles to preach, He told them - "Whoever will not receive you nor hear you, as you depart from there, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony against them. Assuredly, I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!" (Mark 6:11). Even worse than the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah is rejecting the Gospel of Christ, the Good News of salvation and sanctification from all sin.

The meaning and purpose of life is not to do "whatever feels good or turns you on" - that is slavery to sin, to compulsive-addictive behaviors that will maim and kill you. The true purpose of this life is to prepare for the next, to strive for theosis, becoming partakers of the divine nature: "Pursue peace with everyone and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14).

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit! Christ is among us! He is and ever shall be!
