CITA, But What Was My Question?

Christ is the answerHow many times, when watching a football game or baseball game on TV, have you seen a spectator holding up a big sign with "John 3:16" written on it? He knows what this verse says, but most of the TV audience likely don't know - they just think he's some kind of religious nut-case.

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit! Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!

A similar saying that you might have seen on a car's front license plate holder or back window is "Christ Is The Answer" (CITA). "Yes, indeed," people might say, "But What Was My Question?" Do we take the time to really listen to people's pain, their questions, their "felt needs" - and try to help them solve their problems... or do we simply trot out a trite phrase like "Jesus Loves You" or "Christ Is The Answer" ...and walk away?

Yes indeed, Jesus Christ loves every one of us and He is the ultimate answer to all our sorrows and needs. But Jesus Himself didn't just say to people - "I love you and I'm the answer." Rather, He fed the people who were hungry, He healed those who were sick or disabled, and He drove out the demons that were messing with their minds and souls. In other words, He helped them with their pain, their "felt needs," He fed the five thousand before saying - "I am the Bread of Life: he who comes to Me will not be hungry, and he who believes in Me will never be thirsty" (John 6:35).

It's easy to come up with some stock answer that we've seen on social media or TV when we hear about demonstrations and riots in the cities. But have we taken the time to find out about what the poor, mainly Afro-Americans and Latinos but also a fair number of White folks, have experienced? Do we see them as a case within a class or category, or do we get to know them as real persons who have a hurting history and shaky present? Let's take the time to really listen and learn!

Is there some way for White, middle-class Americans (and others) to understand what Black Americans have experienced due to remnants of slavery? Yes! We've found free versions of Booker T. Washington's autobiography Up From Slavery: download the PDF version or the EPUB version from our website. Booker T. Washington was born into slavery but taught himself to read and worked his way through a higher education, going on to establish the Tuskeegee Institute in Alabama. I'm over halfway through the book: it's inspiring reading!

Dennis Prager's website has a new 5-minute video: "Who Is Booker T. Washington?" It briefly tells about him and his philosophy of teaching former slaves a marketable trade as well as "book learnin'" so they could use these skills to contribute to society. The video also mentions W.E.B. DuBois, born in 1868 in a relatively tolerant and integrated community in Massachusetts, the first Afro-American to earn a doctorate. He gradually became more radical, joined the U.S. Communist Party, and eventually renounced his citizenship and moved to Ghana, where he died. So we see here two different approaches: working with the system to improve it, or working against the system to overthrow it.

Another famous Afro-American, Frederick Douglass, was an abolitionist, social reformer, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement. Here are free copies of his book Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave: download the PDF version or the EPUB version from our website. Take the time to learn and understand where our Black neighbors are coming from. [A free EPUB e-book reader app is Calibre for Windows, Macs, and Linux.]

King David wrote about the Lord's great glory - "He raises up the poor out of the dust, lifts up the needy from the ash heap; that He may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people" (Psalm 113:7-8). I've mentioned before that my first ancestor in the New World was a "white slave," and indentured servant who belonged to one of the Mayflower Pilgrims but was emancipated en route to America because the Pilgrims decided not to have slavery in their colony.

He was a poor, roughneck Brit: he and another former indentured servant fought the first duel in the New World (thankfully neither of them were killed) and he was put in stocks for brawling. His descendants, however, went on to become U.S. Presidents, Civil War generals, governors, and preachers. I write this not to boast: about 10% of Americans, although they may not know it, have an ancestor who came over on the Mayflower and likely about ten U.S. Presidents in their ancestry. We may have had humble beginnings, but God can raise up the poor out of the dust!

It's an anachronism, however, to read my current situation into the past history of my Black neighbors: over half of the people in our 12-unit condo building are Afro-American: I need to get to know them better in order to understand where they're coming from. Each and every person has a different, unique life story.

In Romans 10:4, the Apostle Paul wrote - "For Christ is the fulfillment of the Law for righteousness to everyone who believes." Who doesn't want to have their dreams and goals fulfilled? But some have given up their hopes. Some have become bitter and rebellious because they think "the system" is stacked against them. Relying on the law isn't the answer. Law relies on the threat or use of force, so they answer force with force.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said - "Do not think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I did not come to destroy, but to fulfill it" (Matthew 5:17). Jesus Christ is the fulfillment our fulfillment. We don't need to rely on force or violence. Jesus is the goal, so let's run the race to that goal for the prize: to be renewed, transformed into His image and likeness: "We all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit" (2 Corinthians 3:18).

But before we shoot out a quick, glib saying like "Jesus Loves You" or "Christ Is The Answer," let's take the time to really listen and find out what their question is.

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit! Christ is among us! He is and ever shall be!

NOW, THE NEWS:

FAMOUS LAST WORDS – COVID-19 DIRECTIVES
from: BioEdge

Covid-19 directives (26 Jul.) Journalist Jordan Schachtel has helpfully collected directives from health authorities of five states issued at the beginning of the pandemic which forced nursing homes to accept coronavirus patients who had recovered but were still infectious. As a result tens of thousands of nursing home residents have died. He describes them as "what amounts to de facto death warrants."

Here are the instructions given to nursing homes in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Michigan and California. The number of deaths has been taken from data on the CDC site. As of July 12, the CDC had reported 38,518 deaths in nursing homes.

New York Department of Health: "No resident shall be denied admission or re-admission to the [nursing home] solely on a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19." (March 25, deaths at July 12, 4296)

Pennsylvania Department of Health: "Nursing care facilities must continue to accept new admissions and receive readmissions for current residents who have been discharged from the hospital who are stable to alleviate the increasing burden in the acute care setting. This may include stable patients who have had the COVID-19 virus." (March 18, deaths at July 12, 3438).

New Jersey Department of Health: "No patient/resident shall be denied re-admission or admission to the post-acute care setting solely based on a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. Persons under investigation for COVID-19 who have undergone testing in the hospital shall not be discharged until results are available. Post-acute care facilities are prohibited from requiring a hospitalized patient/resident who is determined medically stable to be tested for COVID-19 prior to admission or readmission." (March 31, deaths at July 12, 3524).

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer: "Any alternate care facility within the state that has available bed capacity to receive the resident must accept a transfer authorized by this order." (April 15, deaths at July 12, 1540).

California Department of Public Health: "Prepare to Receive Residents with Suspected or Confirmed COVID-19 Infection: Although COVID-19 infection can be severe and require inpatient care, some infections may be mild and not require medical care in an acute care facility. Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 infection may be medically stable for discharge prior to discontinuation of transmission-based precautions; therefore, [skilled nursing facilities] should prepare to accept such residents and institute the appropriate precautions to prevent spread of infection to HCP and other patients." (March 20, deaths at July 12, 2458).

In California, the founder of a lobby group called Justice for COVID-19 Eldercide, Cindy Sheehan, claims that these policies seem like "premeditated murder." Sheehan told the Southern California Record: "The state of California could have done this on purpose to increase the number of COVID-19 cases. Secondly, it could have been to save money on pensions, Social Security and health care because the state pays for residents to be put in skilled nursing facilities after their retirement money runs out." [read more~~]

COMMENTARY: Total patients sent back to nursing homes in these six states = 15,256. God only knows exactly how many of them died and how many other nursing home patients and staff they infected who consequently died, but we know that about half of the Wuhan Virus fatalities in the U.S. occurred in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. And the governors of these states consider it a matter of economics, balancing the budget. The solution? Eliminate nursing homes, provide more home and community-based supports and better utilize hospitals for skilled nursing care: see "A Nursing Home Alternative."

KAZAKHSTAN: TWO CHURCHES' BUILDINGS ORDERED CONFISCATED IN NUR-SULTAN
by Felix Corley: Forum 18 News Service

man praying outside Grace Church (29 Jul.) Nur-Sultan city administration ordered the confiscation of Grace Presbyterian Church, and of Agape Pentecostal Church's half-finished place of worship on the same site. Grace Church – which bought its building in 2001 - is challenging the order in court. "From 2002 we have dreamed of having our own building, and we just started building it," says Agape Church Pastor Igor Tsay. "And then this. It was unexpected – a shock." City authorities in Kazakhstan's capital Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana) have ordered the confiscation of the buildings of both Grace Presbyterian Church, and of Agape Pentecostal Church which is building a place of worship on the same site. City authorities claim the land is needed for a new kindergarten. But officials refuse to explain why they cannot find another site for this, despite two possibly suitable other buildings being in the same Baikonur District of the capital.

Officials have also refused to explain why Grace Church is being offered compensation of far less value than its church building is worth. The Church legally bought the former college building in 2001 and has spent a lot of money on renovation. The decree to confiscate the property came on 14 February 2020 from Nur-Sultan Akim (head of administration) Altai Kulginov. An earlier 2014 attempt to confiscate the property – also allegedly for a kindergarten – was resolved between the Akimat and the Church. Grace Church is trying to challenge the 2020 decree through the courts, but the judge hearing the case is ill and it is unclear when it will resume.

Dmitry Kan, Grace Church's Pastor, told Forum 18 that "we simply want to continue to use our property for worship. From 2002 we have dreamed of having our own building, and we just started building it," Igor Tsay, Pastor of Agape Church, told Forum 18. "And then this. It was unexpected – a shock." The Church stopped construction of its new place of worship and offices as soon as it learnt of the decision to confiscate the site.

The move to confiscate both churches' property appears to have been initiated by the then Construction and Residential Policy Department of the Akimat (city administration). It is unclear if corruption is a factor in the confiscation decision. Local media reported on 17 July that an unnamed former head of the Department is being investigated over the alleged embezzlement of 200 Million Tenge [read more~~]

COMMENTARY: Based on our 17-year experience in Russia, this is fairly typical Soviet-style behavior. The authorities force churches to re-register for no real reason, costing time and money, sometimes resulting in rejection of their applications for spurious reasons. Or they find "errors" in their property deeds or "violations" of building codes, resulting in confiscation of their property or destruction of their buildings.

METROPOLITAN DRABYNKO CALLED FOR BAN OF ROC IN UKRAINE IF OCU CHURCH IN CRIMEA IS DEMOLISHED
from: Religious Information Service of Ukraine

OCA Metr. Drabynko (27 Jul.) Metropolitan Drabynko of the OCU responded on his Facebook page to the decision of the Crimean court, which ordered Archbishop Klyment of the Crimean Diocese of the OCU to demolish the church in Yalta in five days.

Metropolitan Drabynko emphasizes that "the state leadership should immediately give an adequate response to this spiritual terrorism." If the temple of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is demolished, the Ukrainian authorities should prohibit the activities of the ROC in Ukraine, as an accomplice of international terrorism.

“I believe that state leadership should immediately give an adequate response to this ‘spiritual’ terrorism. If the declared threats are implemented – the activities of the ROC in Ukraine as an accomplice of international terrorism should be banned. A myriad of church buildings of the UOC, which is under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate, have been built in violation of the relevant legislation. The rules for the use of premises under the lease are extensively violated. An infinite number of violations during commissioning and fire safety rules,” the Metropolitan noted.

As RISU has previously reported, on July 23, Russian bailiffs handed over to Archbishop Klyment (Crimean Diocese of the OCU) an order to demolish the temple in Yevpatoria, which is in annexed Crimea. [read more~~]

COMMENTARY: The Russian Orthodox Church in Crimea is clearly being used as a catspaw to advance Russian political control of this Ukrainian territory it invaded and annexed.

MAJORITY OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS NOT ACCESSIBLE FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
from: Disability Scoop

Most schools are not ADA-compliant. (27 Jul.) Thirty years after the Americans with Disabilities Act became law, most of the nation’s public school districts remain inaccessible to students with disabilities, government investigators say. A Government Accountability Office report out late last week finds that in 63 percent of public school districts, at least a quarter of facilities aren’t physically accessible to those with disabilities. Problems at the schools included steep ramps, inaccessible playgrounds and restrooms and door handles that are difficult to use, among other issues.

Moreover, in 17 percent of districts, there are schools that typically do not serve students with physical disabilities because of the barriers in their buildings. In site visits to 55 schools across 16 districts, the most common issues cited by GAO investigators were related to restrooms, interior doorways and classrooms. Barriers existed in all of the schools regardless of the age or condition of the facility, they found, but were most prevalent in buildings that were over 25 years old.

About 70 percent of school districts have plans to improve the accessibility of their facilities in the next three years, the report indicated. That includes everything from large-scale renovations to small upgrades like changing door hardware or signage. Cost issues were frequently cited by school officials as a challenge to ensuring accessibility. One issue GAO noted is that the U.S. Department of Justice has not issued technical assistance specific to physical accessibility in schools as it has for other settings like stadiums. Investigators recommended that the Justice Department work with the Department of Education to provide this type of guidance.

"Sadly, this GAO report shows that thirty years after the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, its promise has yet to fully be realized," said Virginia Rep. Bobby Scott who chairs the House education committee and was one of the lawmakers to request the investigation. "While an estimated 70 percent of districts had renovations planned in the next few years, the devastating impact of COVID-19 on school resources is putting these necessary improvements at risk." [read more~~]

COMMENTARY: It is frankly inexcusable for school districts with most buildings over 25 years old to have not gone to the trouble of caring for their disabled students, even though the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) came into full legal effect 30 years ago requiring them to do so. You can be certain the lavish salaries for the abundance of administrators were not decreased in order to care for their students with disabilities. Do "normal" people not care about "invalids"? Or does a disability make their personhood invalid?

DUTCH CONCERN OVER BILL FOR 'COMPLETED LIFE' EUTHANASIA
from: BioEdge

'completed life' euthanasia (26 Jul.) A Dutch legislator has submitted a private member’s bill to allow "completed life" euthanasia. Pia Dijkstra, of the D66 party, was ready to table her proposal earlier in the year -- but it seemed tactless to do so in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. The bill would allow people over 75 who feel that they have come to the end of their life and have a persistent wish to die to ask for euthanasia.

"There is a group of elderly people who have finished their lives. They say: I go to sleep every night with the hope that I won't wake up again. I want to make euthanasia possible for that group under strict conditions," Dijkstra told the media. "The problem is getting bigger now that the difference between your biological and your biographical life is increasing thanks to advancing medical conditions."

Two of the Christian parties in the governing coalition are strongly opposed to the idea. ChristenUnie leader Gert-Jan Segers said: "I find it extremely painful that at a time when older people feel extra vulnerable, D66 is submitting a proposal that we know will lead to increased anxiety in many older people. If corona has made anything clear to us, it is that real attention and good care make the difference in a human life."

Harry van der Molen, of the CDA party declared: "As far as the CDA is concerned, there will be no completed life law, but we will tackle the causes of loneliness. Especially when people feel alone, abandoned or lost, they need attention or care." [read more~~]

COMMENTARY: The Dutch legislator who proposed this bill says - "It is a small group, someone must be at least 75 years old." So is it OK if you kill those over 75, just a "small group" (75 million Baby Boomers in the U.S.)? She goes on to say that a "professional end-of-life counsellor" (I've never heard of such a profession until now!) must discuss this decision with the over-75 person: how will that work? "Well, it seems you're depressed and tired of living. So you want to end it all, is that correct? Allright, here's what we'll do: simply take this pill (or shot of morphine) and you'll fall asleep... and not wake up. Just sign here." That's how it works, my friends. All it takes is a signature by a depressed person.

RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY SENDS PROTESTS TO WESTERN EMBASSIES OVER LGBT FLAGS HOISTED ON THEIR BUILDINGS
from: Interfax-Religion

LGBT flag at Moscow US Embassy (28 Jul.) The United Kingdom embassy in Moscow has received a note of protest from the Russian Foreign Ministry over the appearance of an LGBT flag on the embassy building in late June, a diplomatic source confirmed to Interfax on Tuesday.

Russian State Duma member Vasily Piskaryov said earlier that the Russian Foreign Ministry had forwarded notes of protest to representatives of the embassies of the UK, the United States, and Canada over LGBT flags hoisted on these embassies' buildings in Moscow at the end of June in support of the LGBT community, its rights and freedoms.

"The Foreign Ministry promptly responded to our address by forwarding notes of protest to the embassies of the U.S., the UK, and Canada in which it stressed that their actions violated the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and national legislation of the Russian Federation," Piskaryov said on Monday.

"These steps were taken during the period of voting on amendments to the Russian Constitution that sealed provisions on protecting and safeguarding traditional family values," he said.

According to Piskaryov, his commission "continues its work and intends to draw special attention to attempts of interference in our country's internal affairs during preparations for the upcoming regional elections on September 13." [read more~~]

COMMENTARY: The Western embassies are indeed interfering in the internal affairs of Russia, which has strict laws limiting the public promotion of LGBT "rights." This is right and it is their right to keep their society oriented toward at least semi-Christian values. It seems the West has almost totally abandoned Christian values and has gone neo-pagan.

NOW, OUR VIEWS:

Boomer Lives Matter!

Take a Stand With Us!

Dear friend,

Do Boomer Lives Matter to you? The 75,000,000 "Baby Boomers" born from 1946 to 1965 in the U.S. are aging and many becoming disabled. We need you to Take a Stand With Us! I can't do this all by myself. My wife and I have made and given away over 200 face masks: here's our instruction sheet, so you can help - How-to-Make-Nose-and-Mouth-Masks.pdf. But now we need to face and deal with a much more serious problem.

Hopefully, as more and more healthy people test positive without becoming seriously ill, we will achieve "herd immunity" and this COVID-19 pandemic will sooner or later fade away. But one thing that's not fading away is many people's ambivalence toward the elderly, frail, and disabled. In my blogs and newsletters over the last few years, I have detailed the bias against them that exists. Here are just a few of these recent articles, as of July 2020:

* Gosport hospital deaths: Prescribed painkillers 'shortened 456 lives'

* THE HORRIFIC STORIES BEHIND ASSISTED SUICIDE LAWS

* WHAT ARE EUTHANASIA AND ASSISTED SUICIDE?

* DOCTOR WHO PROMOTES 'TERMINAL SEDATION' OF SICK PATIENTS KEYNOTES AT L.A. ARCHDIOCESE END-OF-LIFE CONFERENCE
(Read how the terms "hospice" and "palliative care" are being gradually redefined to result in "euthanasia.")

* PORTUGAL MOVES CLOSER TO LEGAL EUTHANASIA

* STATES TURNED NURSING HOMES INTO 'SLAUGHTER HOUSES' BY FORCING THEM TO ADMIT DISCHARGED COVID-19 PATIENTS

* #BoomerRemover: Today's Easy Fix

* FOCUSING PUBLIC POLICY ON NURSING HOMES COULD CUT COVID-19 DEATHS BY HALF

* QUESTIONS RAISED ABOUT SWEDEN’S COVID-19 POLICY ON NURSING HOMES

* The Bias of VSL ("Value of a Statistical Life") Measurements

The very idea of VSL is horrific - that government economists are calculating the Value of a Statistical Life - and then use this as a basis on which to decide who lives and who dies, deciding how much it costs to keep an unborn baby or an elderly or disabled person alive, and if a certain dollar limit is exceeded, that person is aborted or put on "hospice" status and given high doses of morphine or other opiods leading to death. But it is happening. These articles give ample evidence that a very real movement toward euthanasia, by euphemistically redefining "palliative care", exists in the U.S. and around the world. This is not something we can ignore any longer!

King David felt the pain of being contemptible, forgotten, written off, and even persecuted:

Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in distress. My eye, my soul, and my body waste away with grief. For my life is spent with sorrow, my years with sighing. My strength fails because of my iniquity. My bones are wasted away. Because of all my adversaries I have become utterly contemptible to my neighbors, a fear to my acquaintances. Those who saw me on the street fled from me. I am forgotten from their hearts like a dead man. I am like broken pottery. For I have heard the slander of many, terror on every side, while they conspire together against me, they plot to take away my life. But I trust in You, O Lord. I said, "You are my God." My times are in Your hand. Deliver me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me. (Psalm 31:9-15)

Our times should be "in God's hand," not in the hands of those who are trying to save money by deliberately shortening people's lives. Because God created man in His image and likeness, each and every human life is precious and should be safeguarded by doctors and other medical personnel until natural death occurs. That is what they have sworn an oath to do.

You and I are not merely a "broken pottery" - just a material object to be thrown out when it starts to wear out. Break free from the mental straightjacket of passive secular materialism that teaches - "There's nothing we can do about it, old and sick people are just going to die anyway," so they're sent away to a nursing home or long-term care facility where they frequently die of disease or loneliness because hardly anyone takes time to visit them. Don't put it off until "later" or tomorrow. Don't just let it slide, thinking "I'm too busy right now," or "This doesn't concern me," because it will concern you sooner than you think. Together, we can take action and make a difference!

Sincerely,

"Dr. Bob"

Robert D. Hosken, M.Min., D.Min.

Just in today from BioEdge: Belgium's euthanasia law under fire in European Court of Human Rights. This article tells how Godelieva de Troyer, a 64-year-old Belgian woman, was "euthanized" in April of 2012. The case is now before the European Court of Human Rights due to gross violations of Belgium's law on euthanasia: the attending doctor who was required to provide long-term counseling apparently had only one session with her, in which he administered the fatal injection. He and two other "independent" doctors who signed the document were members of Belgium's "End of Life Information Forum." This woman didn't have the ghost of a chance.
