ASSISTED SUICIDE IS ON THE LEGISLATIVE AGENDA IN A NUMBER OF JURISDICTIONS
from: BioEdge

assisted dying news roundup (4 Oct.) New Zealand. Kiwis will vote in a referendum on voluntary euthanasia on October 17. Parliament backed legislation earlier in the year, but the final decision rests with the public. Whether the next government is led by Jacinda Arderns's Labour Party or the Nationals, the referendum will be binding. In the event of a "yes" vote, the End of Life Choice Act will come into force in October 2021.

Massachusetts. Assisted suicide is legal in nine US states and the District of Columbia. Some political observers believe that the Bay State could become the tenth. The state legislature's Committee on Public Health has approved an End-of-Life Options Act, a bill which was first introduced in 2011 modelled on Oregon's law.

However, it appears that the Massachusetts bill's tacticians believe that it should not be brought to the whole legislature during the coronavirus pandemic. "If we don't get it done this year we have a good shot, a better shot, to getting it done next year. It is not a negative indicator that a bill doesn't get done in a particular session," Senator William N. Brownsberger, a co-sponsor of the bill, told The Independent.

Portugal. Earlier this year the Portuguese parliament passed measures which would permit euthanasia and assisted suicide. However, they have been held up by an appeal for a referendum on the issue. The details of the referendum will be worked out in Parliament early in October.

Austria. Four people have applied to the Austrian Constitutional Court questioning the constitutionality of a ban on euthanasia and assisted suicide in the country’s penal code. The court should hand down a decision before the end of the year.

Ireland. A controversial private member’s bill which would legalise assisted suicide will probably be delayed until next year to allow an Oireachtas (parliamentary) committee to study the issue. At the moment, the Oireachtas is in the middle of a debate which will be resumed on October 7.

Tasmania. The parliament of the Australian state of Tasmania is still debating the merits of assisted dying. Sponsored by upper house member Mike Gaffney, an independent, this bill is the fourth in ten years. Previous bills failed in 2010, 2013 and 2017. [read more~~]

COMMENTARY: Massachusetts Sen. Brownsberger doesn't want it to be too obvious, when sick and elderly people are being killed by Covid in understaffed, substandard nursing homes, to pile on them a new law that would allow the state as caretakers of last resort to convince these tired and suffering folks that it's time for them to go.

AZERBAIJAN: 34 FREEDOM OF RELIGION CASES PENDING AT ECTHR
by Felix Corley: Forum 18 News Service

Chingiz Asgarov (6 Oct.) In September, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in Strasbourg accepted Azerbaijan's unilateral declarations in nine further freedom of religion or belief cases admitting that it had violated human rights and pledging to pay compensation within three months. The Court has already ruled on 21 such cases, accepting Azerbaijan's admissions of violations in 13 cases and finding against Azerbaijan in a further eight. These decisions leave 34 known cases relating to freedom of religion or belief – involving 61 individual applicants and 5 communities - at the Court awaiting decisions.

The 34 cases – lodged at the ECtHR between 2007 and 2019 – cover cases where individuals have been jailed for leading prayers, punished for refusing compulsorily military service on grounds of conscience, raided for holding religious meetings, faced unlawful house searches, punished for talking to others about their faith, faced censorship of religious literature, faced denial of state registration for their community, and faced movement restrictions because of personal appearance.

An ECtHR decision is expected on 22 October in the case of Jehovah's Witness Nina Gridneva, Jehovah's Witnesses told Forum 18. In September 2010, police in the capital Baku stopped her while she was offering religious literature on the street and seized the literature. A court subsequently fined her for "illegal" religious literature distribution. ECtHR judgments require governments not only to pay any compensation awarded but to rectify the conditions which led to the human rights violations.

The nine ECtHR cases in which Azerbaijan admitted violations and pledged to pay compensation to the victims, and which the Court closed in September, bring to 13 the number of such cases closed after Azerbaijan admitted violations. The ECtHR has found against Azerbaijan in a further eight cases, awarding compensation to the victims.

Asabali Mustafayev, the lawyer who represented seven whose cases were decided on 3 September, expressed dissatisfaction that, by accepting the government's "unilateral declaration," the Court had not reviewed the substance of the cases. He said they had tried "to have the government commit to its obligations to take general measures that such violations could not recur in future. But here the government has simply admitted a violation but has not taken any obligation on itself."

The telephone of Chingiz Asgarov, the Deputy Chair of the Supreme Court – and the Azerbaijani government's Agent at the ECtHR – went unanswered each time Forum 18 called on 30 September and 6 October. [read more~~]

COMMENTARY: It's an easy way to shirk the responsibility to do something about violations of international law by admitting to the problem, promising to do better, then doing nothing about it. BTW, notice in the photo how this Azerbaijani government official is looking off to the side as he speaks: this is an indication that he's lying and isn't very good at it. Professional liars know to look you in the eye while they're lying.

UOC-MP PRIEST, DISMISSED FOR CONGRATULATING PUTIN, PREVENT THE FAITHFUL FROM CONDUCTING INVENTORY OF CHURCH
from: Religious Information Service of Ukraine

UOC-MP Priest, Fr. Sharan (8 Oct.) The church of the village of Halynivka, Ovadnovska Territorial Community, was sealed. This happened as the notorious priest of the UOC-MP, Fr Sharan secretly held a service there on October 4.

The conflict between clergy and parishioners lasted for a whole day. The peasants even spent the night near the church, because the odious clergyman did not allow them to conduct an inventory of church property and transfer it. In his defense, he wondered: "Have I done anything wrong?" This is reported by BUG [name of a river] media outlet citing the story of the Avers TV channel.

Note that after residents of Halynivka had found out about Sharan's congratulations to Putin, on August 9, a community meeting was initiated, at which they voted for the transition to the OCU [the new Orthodox Church of Ukraine]. On the same day, the Diocese of Volodymyr-Volynsky the UOC-MP appointed another priest, Fr Yuri, to serve in the church. For two months Oleksiy Sharan did not appear in the village. They did not even know where he was. However, on October 4, he secretly visited the church and even performed divine service. Residents of the village, who are supporters of the OCU, were outraged by Sharan's visit to the church.

After the service, a commission that was set up on occasion tried to conduct an inventory in the church, that is, an inventory of property and material values. However, Oleksiy Sharan, together with the clergyman of the Assumption Cathedral of Volodymyr-Volynsky, did not allow them to do this. The priests went at all lengths: they even used their fists and literally pushed out lawyer Mykola Sorokopud, whom the religious community hired to join the OCU in accordance with the law.

"Leave the temple, and then we will speak outside the temple grounds. Off you go! Come on! Come on! I come from a military family. Off you go, I said, get out of here! Because you have no right to do anything here at all. You've come here and are trying to say something here," the clergyman insisted. Fr. Oleksiy Sharan, in turn, assured that he would not transfer any church property to anyone. And he will not allow anyone to conduct an inventory, the story says. [read more~~]

COMMENTARY: This situation illustrates how much the Ukrainian people are angry about Russia's invasion of eastern Ukraine and want nothing to do with a priest who publicly praises Russia's leader.

ED DEPARTMENT REMINDS SCHOOLS OF IDEA OBLIGATIONS DURING PANDEMIC
from: Disability Scoop

Department of Education (5 Oct.) With an unprecedented school year underway, federal officials are weighing in yet again on how educators ought to be serving students with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The U.S. Department of Education issued two question-and-answer documents last week offering further clarification on how the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and other laws should be implemented while the nation grapples with the coronavirus. The agency has now offered guidance at least a half-dozen times since March on how services for those with disabilities should proceed amid the pandemic. The Education Department said the latest information comes in response to inquiries it has received.

Above all, federal officials used the new guidance as another opportunity to impress upon educators their continued responsibilities under IDEA. "No matter what primary instructional delivery approach is chosen, (state educational agencies, school districts) and individualized education program (IEP) teams remain responsible for ensuring that a free appropriate public education (FAPE) is provided to all children with disabilities," reads a Q&A document issued by the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services' Office of Special Education Programs.

IEP teams should consider a variety of ways that services can be provided, particularly given that changing circumstances may force children to move between in-person, remote and hybrid schedules as the school year goes on, the Education Department said. What's more, in cases where extended school year services were not delivered over the summer because of the pandemic, schools should factor whether the offerings can be provided during the school year or during breaks or vacations, according to the guidance. [read more~~]

COMMENTARY: The U.S. is straining under the Covid pandemic, which is stretching states' education dollars to the breaking point. When the federal government urges the states to follow the laws and provide a FAPE to children with an IEP according to the IDEA, the states are fed up with this alphabet soup of rules. The states can't just print more money like the federal government can, so something has to give, and it turns out to be the weakest link in the chain: kids with disabilities.

TAKE ME TO CHURCH: DOCUMENTING UKRAINE'S DIY KIOSK-ALTARS AND POP-UP CHAPELS
from: Calvert Journal

popup chapel in Ukraine (14 Sep.) Churches in old wagons or upcycled garages? Domes rising in between tower blocks? Lavish cathedrals next to shopping centres? Orthodox Chic explores the development of religious architecture in Ukraine since the fall of communism.

Religious architecture and church-building experts have been absent for almost a century in Ukraine, with religion officially repressed by the Soviet government. Instead, cathedral architects like Alexey Schusev migrated from designing churches to creating monuments such as Lenin’s mausoleum.

Yet, despite increased post-Soviet religious freedom, religious architectural experts haven’t reappeared in Ukraine, the authors of Orthodox Chic argue. Instead, wealthy individuals are building their own gilded status-churches, often used as a backdrop for wedding photos, while poorer communities have been forced to make do with makeshift places of worship, including wagons, shacks, kiosks, village council buildings, or old garages, which often have a cross or a cupola fixed upon them.

“The history of Orthodox Christian architecture, greatly altered by the Soviet period, gets a second chance here [in Ukraine],” the authors write. [read more~~]

PATRIARCH KIRILL IN QUARANTINE AFTER CONTACT WITH CORONAVIRUS PATIENT
from: Interfax-Religion

Patr. Kirill (8 Oct.) Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia did not attend the traditional event marking the repose of Saint Sergius of Radonezh, which is marked on October 8, because he is quarantined.

"I would like to say with deep regret that I cannot share the joy of prayer communion with you this time. The reason is my recent contact with a person who was diagnosed with coronavirus infection. The time needed for my personal quarantine in accordance with the medical recommendations is not over yet. I decided that I cannot put you all at risk of being infected," the patriarch said in his letter to Bishop Foma, locum of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, published on Thursday.

The patriarch said the current pandemic is a serious trial, which shows the strength of prayer. "There are two ways out of any trial, including this one: either the person breaks and loses faith and hope for God's help or he comes out of the situation stronger, with the realization that everything happens according to the Divine Providence. I hope to God that all trials will strengthen our people in faith and will cause many people to turn to Christ," the patriarch said.

In the meantime, Russian Orthodox Church spokesperson Vladimir Legoyda said Patriarch Kirill remains healthy after his contact with a coronavirus patient. "The patriarch of the Russian Church remains in good health, he feels well, he continues working remotely," he said on Telegram on Thursday.

Legoyda said he is certain that the patriarch's self-isolation "is an example of a responsible attitude and care about the safety of the people near him in the conditions of the spread of the coronavirus infection." [read more~~]

COMMENTARY: The leftist and LGBTQ news media are having a heyday with this news: "The anti-mask, anti-gay guy has got the disease!" It sounds familiar, much like another leading figure who came down with Covid.

NOW, OUR VIEWS:

uphold orphans and widows

Uphold Orphans and Widows

(Maybe you've read this before and you're wondering, "Why am I seeing this again?" But millions of other Christians haven't seen it! So please help us by clicking on the title above, then use the "share" buttons to share it with your social media friends. Thanks!!)

How are we to "Be doers - uphold orphans and widows"? Jesus Christ, starting His ministry, quoted the prophet Isaiah, saying: "The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed, and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord" (Luke 4:18-19).

Then He showed His disciples how to preach the Gospel and minister to the sick, handicapped and poor (Luke 5:12-15), and He sent them out two by two and they practiced what He taught (Luke 9:1-2): preach the Gospel, care for the needy and heal the sick. Next, He taught His followers to minister to the same audience: "the poor, the maimed, the lame and the blind" (Luke 14:12-13 and 21). After that, He put it into practice: "Jesus went about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people" (Mat. 9:35).

And in the Great Commission, Jesus commanded His disciples to make more disciples and teach their disciples to FULFILL ("observe" but not just spectate!) everything He had taught His disciples to DO (Mat. 28:18-20). What did He teach His disciples to DO? Preach the Gospel and Minister to "the poor, the maimed, the lame and the blind"! P&M - Preach & Minister - that's Practical Ministry! It's not an "either-or" solution: either preach, evangelize, witness for Christ; or do social action things like feeding the poor, sheltering the homeless, helping the jobless find work. It's a "both-and" proposition: Do Both!

Later, the Apostles selected seven deacons to carry out this diakonia-ministry to the poor, widows, etc. "...and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem exceedingly" (Acts 6:1-7). St. Paul taught that the bishops, pastors and deacons should "equip the saints to do the work of diakonia-ministry to the building up of the body of Christ" (Eph. 4:12). This is not just dry theory or theology: it is practical, hands-on ministry that helps the church grow!

It takes time and effort to learn how to minister, how to serve. We knew a young man in Moscow who told us once - "If I study your courses, then I'll know more about all the hurting people in the world and how to help them, so it's better that I don't know." This is deliberate ignorance. Yes, real learning takes time, so make the effort!

Snowflake Totalitarianism

Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968Rod Dreher states in this interview "Could It Happen Here? The Parallels Between Soviet Bloc and Modern US" - "In America, our idea of totalitarianism is conditioned by our memory of the Cold War and Soviet persecution, as well as George Orwell’s '1984.'" But the younger generation has no memory at all of the Cold War – they were born after 1989 when the Berlin Wall came down.

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit! Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!

You can get Dreher's new book Live Not by Lies: A Manual for Christian Dissidents at Amazon. Dreher's interview continues: "In the Orwellian, Soviet, Stalinist society, the state controlled people by inflicting pain and terror on them. But in the soft totalitarianism that I see coming here, the state will control people - and not only the state, but even more importantly, corporations and institutions like universities will control people by manipulating their access to the economy and to status and to all the markers of middle-class life.

"They won't need the gulags to force conformity on us. We'll do it because we can't stand the idea of losing our jobs. And look, I don't mean to make light of that. It's huge to lose your job, it's massive, but this is how it's going to happen. We see it happening right now.

"Yesterday, I was doing a webinar with J.D. Vance. [He] told me that friends of his who are liberals are already scared to death of what they can and can't say in their workplace. [He said:] 'This is not the state. This is not [President] Donald Trump coming and telling them they can't do that. These are their companies doing it. And this is their fear of victims who have the power to accuse others.' If we ignore the prophetic voices of those who survived communism, we deserve what we get."

Rod Dreher calls this "Soft Totalitarianism" but I prefer to call it "Snowflake Totalitarianism" because western civilization since WW2 has produced three generations of mostly wimpy-whineys who don't know how to handle hardship. When their smartphones lose a cell-tower connection, they panic: they don't know how to cope with it. If someone innocently utters a "trigger phrase" like "But I have several friends who are Afro-American" – they suffer a huge meltdown and scream, "You're a racist!" They're so conditioned by social media and our educational system to think and speak only "politically correct" thoughts lest their Facebook, Twitter, and/or Gmail accounts be shut down or they be blackballed at school. But not only that, they also demand that you and I - normal people - conform to their fantasy world. This is how today's "Cancel Culture" works. Snowflakes melt at normal room temperature, it doesn't take any special heat or pressure for them to melt down.

A few years ago, I referred to Rod Dreher's earlier book The Benedict Option. If I were to write a book like his, I'd probably title it The Discipleship Imperative because it's not just for monastics like St. Benedict and his followers and it's not at all an option. It's imperative: all Christians are called to discipleship! In Acts 11:19-27 we read how the Gospel was spread to Antioch by ordinary believers. This passage closes with the words - "The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch." So the question we should ask is - "What were they before they were called Christians?" The answer is obvious, it's right there in the text: they were disciples. All real, true, genuine believers in and followers of Christ are disciples. And so, if you're not a disciple, you're not a real, true, genuine believer in and follower of Christ.

I lived less than a kilometer from the East German border in 1962-64 while in the military, listening to Soviet artilliery practicing just across the border. Then after university, I spent 3.5 years in mission work taking millions of Bibles, New Testaments, and other Christian literature behind the Iron Curtain. We visited Czechoslovakia just a couple of years after the 1968 Soviet invasion. I met Christians whose children were driven insane by the incessant anti-Christian, Marxist indoctrination in the schools there. One of my coworkers spent six months in Moscow's infamous Lubianka Prison being interrogated every day by the KGB until he broke. Several other coworkers spent weeks or months in communist prisons, five were killed behind the Iron Curtain. And I met other fake Christians who had actually "gone over to the other side" and would report me to the secret police, as I learned later. Then my wife and I spent 17 years in the USSR as it fell apart and in Russia. I know our phone lines and email accounts were monitored. So I've personally experienced what Rod Dreher is writing about.

Torture is still going on today in some communist countries: the article "Former Uighur Detention Camp Teacher Describes Interrogations, Screaming, Imprisonments" tells of torture and forced sterilization of Uighurs in today's communist China. But in some countries, the Marxists have used and are using more subtle techniques: Rod Dreher describes how believers suffered in Czechoslovakia during the Soviet era. But that country was not made communist by force; rather, because they had been betrayed by Western diplomats who sold out Czechoslovakia to appease Hitler (British PM Neville Chamberlain in 1938 after concluding the Munich Agreement, proclaimed he had secured "peace in our time."), the Czechs welcomed the "liberating" Red Army at the end of WW2. But then the Soviets began quietly installing "their own people" in the news media, government, police, and military leadership. Before most Czechs realized how they had been deceived and infiltrated, they were living under a Soviet-controlled dictatorship.

And so it happens when "peace in our time," free love, free abortions, free housing, free education, free healthcare, free... free... free... is what the lying politicians, educators, and news media keep pumping into our minds -

"Everyone deceives his neighbor, and does not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies; they weary themselves to commit iniquity. Your habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, says the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord of Hosts, Behold, I will melt them, and try them; for how else should I do, because of the daughter of my people? Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceit: one speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in his heart he lays wait for him. Shall I not visit them for these things? says the Lord; shall my soul not be avenged on such a nation as this? For the mountains I will take up a weeping and wailing, and for the pastures of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that no one passes through; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the birds of the sky and the animals have fled, they are gone." (Ezekiel 9:5-10)

Of course, there's a price to pay when everything's free: after all of the "filthy rich capitalist exploiters" have fled abroad or been executed, after all their industries have been run into the ground, and after all the natural resources have been polluted or plundered, then the government simply resorts to wildly printing so much worthless money that the economy goes belly up and the people begin lying, cheating, and stealing just to survive. We witnessed this first-hand in Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, and the USSR. Construction of apartment blocks for "the proletariat" was so sloppy that the buildings were falling apart before they were finished and just after the first people moved in they looked like 100-year-old slums.

If we replaced a burned-out light bulb in the hallway of our apartment building in Russia, it would be stolen and replaced with another burned-out light bulb by the next morning. (There was a joke: why does a burned-out light bulb cost 10 rubles but a new light bulb only cost 5 rubles? Because you can't buy any new light bulbs.) Telephone lines disappeared from the poles so the thieves could sell the copper as scrap metal. Russians would take the windshield wipers, tires and wheels off and the batteries out of their cars each night, or else they would come out the next morning to find their car propped up on bricks, wipers, batteries, tires and wheels missing. An American friend in Moscow bought a new Russian car late one afternoon, planning to install an anti-theft alarm the next day, but the car was stolen the first night! Orphanages were full of disabled children that their parents simply refused to take home from the hospital, or the parents were alcoholics, so these children were malnourished, socially undeveloped, and barely cared for in the orphanages.

But today we in the West think we have everything: an overabundance of food, big homes, air conditioning, nice cars, high-definition color TVs, high-speed internet, a dizzying array of streaming movie services, modern medicine, antibiotics, the Pill, etc., so that when anything goes haywire, we don't know how to cope. This is what you get when you worship the false gods of Socialism and/or materialism -

"I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman, Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. She teaches and seduces my servants to commit sexual immorality, and to eat things sacrificed to idols. I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. Behold, I will throw her into a bed, and those who commit adultery with her into great oppression, unless they repent of her works. I will kill her children with Death, and all the churches will know that I am he who searches the minds and hearts" (Revelation 2:20-23).

There are always those nay-sayer pseudo-Christians, even some pastors, who say - "You can believe whatever you want, love whomever you like, and behave however you choose: if you really feel you're a girl although you were born a boy, go ahead and take estrogen injections, have that surgery, and be whatever you want to be, or if you beget a baby with your girlfriend - just get rid of it, go ahead and kill your baby in the womb!" This is the softness of good times and over-ripe liberty that has rotted into license, exactly the sort of thing St. Peter wrote about -

"For, uttering great swelling words of emptiness, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by licentiousness, those who are indeed escaping from those who live in error; promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for by whom a man is overcome, by the same is he also brought into bondage" (2 Peter 2:18-19).

Those false promises of liberty lead to servitude and corruption, as I have just described. But there is a way out of this bondage: it's what the glorified Christ proclaimed to the Apostle John about the lukewarm Christians of Laodicia -

"Because you say, 'I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing;' and don't know that you are the wretched one, miserable, poor, blind, and naked; I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, that you may become rich; and white garments, that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see. As many as I love, I reprove and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with Me" (Revelation 2:17-20).

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit! Christ is among us! He is and ever shall be!
